Amish White Bread

If you love a slightly sweet, soft, and simple to make white bread then you must make this Amish White Bread. Cut it thick or thin - it's perfect for sandwiches and french toast! I used it recently to make Rainbow Grilled Cheese and it was perfect. Shout out to @im.hungry.cc on TikTok who asked for the recipe! This recipe makes one loaf, but you may want to double it and make two - it's that good!

Here's how to make it:

  • 1 cup warm water (microwave for about 40 seconds)

  • 1/3 cup granulated white sugar

  • 3/4 TBS active dry yeast

  • 1  1/2 TSP kosher salt

  • 1/8 cup vegetable oil (I use canola)

  • 3 cups bread flour (if you don't have bread flour, all-purpose flour works well!)

  1. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in the warm water, and then whisk in yeast. Allow the mixture to sit until the yeast creates foam at the top, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. Add the salt and oil into the yeast mixture. Mix in the flour one cup at a time.

  3. Using your hands, knead the dough on a lightly floured surface until it's smooth.

  4. Transfer the dough to a well-oiled bowl, and turn the dough so it's coated all over in the oil.

  5. Cover the bowl with a damp cloth and allow it to rise until it's doubled, about 1 hour.

  6. Using your hand, punch the dough down in the bowl, then knead it for a few minutes. Shape the dough into a loaf and place it into a well-oiled 9x5 inch loaf pan. Allow the dough to rise (uncovered) for at least 30 minutes, or until dough has risen 1 inch above the pan. It took about 90 minutes for my dough to rise, so be patient.

  7. Preheat your oven to 350° F and bake for 30 minutes. Let it cool in the pan for 15 minutes then carefully transfer it to a cooling rack. Wait until it's cooled to slice it.

Make my rainbow grilled cheese with the bread! It's so fun, especially for the kids!
